Sprezzatura Central

My name is Steve Rubin and I'm a headhunter, although, as my mentor likes to joke, we recruit the whole body. I specialize in Accounting & Corporate Finance and with the recession destroying our economy, you really have to be creative.

Life's roller coaster ride, filled with ups and downs, is guaranteed but we always have a choice. When times are tough, you can complain and sit back helplessly or you can move forward and overcome challenges. I have a few reasons for starting this blog.

On one hand, I've been developing an expertise in recruiting and all the processes that revolve around the job - interviewing, resume design, career decisions, etc. For those who are interested in learning, I'm happy to share the wealth.

I also have more selfish intentions. By constantly jotting down my thoughts and what I'm learning I hope to enhance my skills and track my development.

Let me go over the term Sprezzatura. In simplest form, it means making your efforts appear... well, effortless. Acting with a certain nonchalance. The following quote sums it up nicely:

  • "Writers are not mere copyists of language; they are polishers, embellishers, perfecters. They spend hours getting the timing right--so that what they write sounds completely unrehearsed."
(Louis Menand, "Bad Comma," The New Yorker, June 28, 2004)

From my experience, all successful professionals make what they do seem easy. Whether in recruiting, athletics or politics, these individuals' habits and decisions are perfected and executed with incredible grace. Often, we mistakenly believe they were born with such magnificent talent because most of their hard work is done behind the scenes. Keep in mind, it's the unseen routines that instill the confidence reflected in their presence as they express Sprezzatura.

You know you've made it when you have Sprezzatura.

Welcome to Sprezz Central...
